UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) — The UN Security Council on Saturday welcomed “the continued cooperation of the governments of Iraq and Kuwait” in resolving their bilateral outstanding issues after Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

The 15-nation council, in a press statement issued here, said, “The members of the Security Council welcomed the continued cooperation of the governments of Iraq and Kuwait, and Iraq’s continued commitment to full implementation of its outstanding obligations under the relevant Chapter VII Security Council resolutions.”

The Security Council “called on both States to continue to act in a spirit that builds further confidence and cooperation, which should contribute to the strengthening of their good-neighborly relations and enhancing regional stability,” the statement said.

“The members of the Security Council recognized Kuwait’s cooperation to support the Iraq-Kuwait Boundary Maintenance Project and called on Iraq to complete the field maintenance work in a timely manner,” the statement said.

Kuwait Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled al-Hamad al-Sabah said Kuwait is ready to end the outstanding issues with Iraq in accordance with the international resolutions issued after Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, the Iraqi state-run al- Sabah newspaper reported on Nov. 19.

The two countries recently made tangible strides that might contribute to solve the issues, including striking a 500-million-U. S. dollar deal for the standoff with the Iraqi Airways, which prevented the Iraqi planes from flying to destinations in the West.
